Traditional Tougatta Kokeshi with Rings by Nagao, Masayoshi

Sold

Dimensions: 7-0”h

Tougatta dolls are thought to be the oldest family members of the Traditional school.

This doll is easily recognized by its narrow, columnar body shapes, tapering at the shoulders to a head that is wider than the rest of the doll, and more angular than round. She has the traditional Tougatta bangs split in two with side fringes, thin narrow eyes, and a split nose or cat-type nose.

The most unique feature is that this doll is created with two loose rings circling the waist which are literally carved from the same wood as the body, which as one could understand is a very meticulous method! This treatment is referred to as 'Yamiyo' style kokeshi for which dolls found with loose rings are very rarely seen. The piece is signed on the bottom of the doll.
