Ohseki kokeshi doll

Artisan | Woodworker: Ohseki, Seien

Origin:

Ohseki-san is credited with being one of the leading artists of the Sosaku style Kokeshi. She began creating Sosaku kokeshi in 1950 and has since passed away. There is very little literature available on the artist, other than being born in Yamagata-ken, Yonezawa-shi.

As collectors we felt it was most important to represent all Sosaku Kokeshi artists, whether or not the artist has a written account of his or her life. Each show the diversity of this cultural specialization and the creative work produced by this artist.

Collector's note – descriptive qualities, standard characteristics & ornamentation styles:

This rare figure, entitled Suikou, is part of a series entitled ‘Hitakami-Kokeshi’, which is one of twelve, (12), variations of a ‘bobble head’ doll. It was a limited edition set of dolls created in 1960 in conjunction with a large celebration in Japan.
