Japanese Vintage Kutani Scroll Weights | Fuchin

Offered is a rare and beautiful pair of Kutani Red and Green Scroll Weights with a wave motif in a bulb shape with an Orange silk tassel. Scroll weights, (fuchin), which are a decorative accessory, and are traditionally used when displaying Japanese hanging scrolls (Kakemono). A pair of these small tasseled weights are hung from a scroll's bottom end-rollers called jiku, which help keep the scroll hanging straight, keep it from curling, and control it from moving when the shoji screen is open to bring fresh air into the room. 

Vintage Condition: The Fuchin and Tassel are in excellent condition. “As is” with no effects on the tassel from aging, and retains the original craft/workmanship. No discoloration, chipping/cracking, surface wear, or structural damage was noted. 

Additional Information: A hanging scroll is used to display and exhibit Japanese-style paintings and calligraphy inscriptions usually with silk fabric edges on a decorative paper with silk edging on a firm backing. Typically these are hung in a Tokonoma which is a recessed space in a Japanese-style reception room, (Foyer) in which items for artistic appreciation are displayed.
